Solar PV Shading: Tigo Optimisers and Smart Modules as an alternative to Micro Inverters

Solar panels are usually wired in series to make up a string. Then each string is optimised by the inverter which keeps the panel voltages at the optimum level to ensure maximum production.

However, when one panel in the string is shaded, either by a chimney, trees, other buildings or obstacles on an apartment complex or industrial roof, the panel reduces the output of the entire string. Each panel has a bypass diode to allow current to flow, but the optimum voltage no longer applies to all modules.  So the shaded panel pulls down the production on the whole string.

Micro inverters are often touted as a solution to this problem. However, the solution can be remedied by using optimised panels or putting a Tigo Optimiser onto each panel. The optimiser allows each panel to have its own maximum power voltage, but doesn’t have the same complexity as a micro inverter, and is much less prone to failure.

Micro inverters have a complete grid conversion process, and should they fail, in many cases, it will require scaffolding to get to the panels and remove the offending inverters.

There are situations in which a micro inverter might be useful – for example, apartment blocks with roof access, where there might only be two inverters per apartment. But other than that, for the most part, optimised panels are a more effective solution.

Fronius Solar Inverters

Fronius is an engineering company established by Günter Fronius in Pettenbach, Austria in 1945, manufacturing battery chargers and welding transformers. They have an unrivalled reputation in the manufacture of welders and battery chargers, expanding production to Ukraine and the Czech Republic.

In 1995, they launched their first solar inverter which converts the power from solar panels to feed to the grid. The company now manufactures a wide portfolio of battery chargers, welders and solar photovoltaic inverters.

In 2017, the company expects to have had over 20Gw of solar inverters installed.

Other major manufacturers of Solar Inverters include:

  • ABB

  • SMA

  • Solis

  • Solar Edge

But there are many new entrants to this market, including Huawei, famous for its mobile phones and other electronics. Another major player is Enphase, which produces micro-inverters, mounted one per panel. However, micro inverters have many disadvantages in domestic installations, as in the event of a failure for whatever reason, you need a scaffolding to get to the roof to replace the inverter.

Solartricity is happy to source any of these brands of inverters as required by customers.

Integrated Solar System

Most solar photovoltaic panels are mounted on rails that sit a few centimetres above the roof surface. However, if you are building a new roof and putting solar panels on at the same time, it makes more sense to use an integrated solar system in which the panels are mounted into the roof with suitable mountings and flashings. The panels are less conspicuous because they are closer to being flush with the roof tiles, and there is no wind uplift getting under the panels, so the wind loading is significantly reduced.

Also, if you are covering your roof in expensive slates, you can save the cost of the slates, so although a roof integrated solar photovoltaic system is slightly more expensive, by the time you factor in the savings on expensive slates, it may be the same, or even a lower cost, to make the system roof integrated.

The only disadvantage to roof integrated systems is that the panels are not cooled underneath as effectively. The output of a panel is slightly reduced when the temperature is higher, so this reduces output very slightly. There is need for more research on the extent of this reduction in power, but it is less critical in a country like Ireland than it would be in higher temperature regions in the south of Europe.

A popular mounting system is made in France by IRFTS known as Easy Roof™. You can see how this is fitted by clicking here: http://solartricity.ie/easy-roof/
