I have been researching installing solar panels on my poultry roof. Is there a set distance the panels need to be from each edge of the roof so i can work out exactly how many panels i can install?
If you apply for planning permission, you can apply for planning with any distance from the edges. However, if you are only putting up a small system of less than 50 sq m, then the exemption in the planning guidelines restricts you to being 50cm from any edge. The planning exemptions can be seen here. In considering a planning application, it is quite possible that the same spacing would be demanded by the council, but on many sites there is no benefit to that. In fact, I would think that a roof that is completely covered is less visually intrusive. However, for wind loading, you may also need to respect a distance from the edge.
